These last few months almost everything has had the same smell on it. Whether it’s letters through the post, items bought in the supermarket, anything at all. It’s a very distinctive perfume smell. Doesn’t matter where it was bought or who delivered it, everything smells like this now.

      My guess: someone was shipping a huge quantity of something scented, and it wasn’t packed securely, and it broke open and got all over all the sorting equipment and now everything that touches that machine smells like that now.

      I’ve seen similar things happen.

      I’ve been wondering if it’s a chemical marker being used in shipping to designate that a parcel has been previously scanned/screened.

      That’s a good call actually. It might just be an air freshener, and those things never smell nice. I’m not really sensitive to smells in general, but I can still smell the one a relative had hanging in his car when I was little, and my nose and eyes are still burning from the aggressive chemical stink.
