Seriously why. Sonic and the Black Knight was the last one and it was also the last time you could beat the final boss to a kickaas buttrock theme song. Why don’t we have this anymore?
Woke happened
If by “woke” you mean “a generation of embarrassingly mad 30something dorks said anime intros was bad and now we can’t have fun” :)
I thought those dorks were the ones who wanted them back?
Different generations of 30something. The 30somethings now want them back; the people who were 30ish in 2012 grew up reading issues of EGM yapping about how Sonic “got old”
Ooooooooh
Maybe we should change it up again and make a generation of sonic openings that are experimental animal sounds
I would support it, I guess?
I am currently working in some animal sound based experimental music
I always thought those intros had big
energy. This is the wrong answer on the internet, people loooooove the buttrock from the Daytona USA Championship Edition vocalist and Jun Senoue. They have the sauce. Nobody was asking for Shadow the Hedgehog specifically, but Sonic Team went and did it and we should be thankful imo that Sega ever let their mascot engage in such sincere silliness.
People can enjoy whatever media they want; That’s just how I felt living through the releases. It always struck me as odd and felt really out of place as someone that grew up with the Mega Drive/Genesis games.
Valid. Kid me thought Open your Heart was cringe
Adult me thinks it cheesy and good now though
To be fair, that was also the general consensus when the games were actually new, seemed like right around Sonic Heroes a lot of people started having misgivings about the games. It took the ten-year-olds who played it coming of age for the consensus to shift, which makes sense. Been interesting to watch.
I should also note however that Sonic CD had two vocal themes, both of which slap, so y’know.
I honestly didn’t know that about CD. I didn’t know a single soul with the add-on, let alone the game. I only played it once a couple years ago. I genuinely didn’t like it at all. I have forgotten most things about it aside from really not liking the time travel mechanic.
True, most people played it through the Win95 or Gamecube/PS2 rereleases.
In case you didn’t know, there’s a NASCAR arcade game with more of that sweet Crush 40 buttrock.
Sonic in general does.
No one can enjoy fart rock anymore, we’re all too irony poisoned
TRUTH NUKE although everyone should know this tbh.
I remember being hyped that Crush 40 would be in the third Sonic movie and then getting really disappointed it was only 5 seconds of Live and Learn. It should’ve played through the whole climax.
It should’ve been City Escape in the opening city scene as soon as they jumped from the helicopter
Is sonic movie 3 just a 1:1 SA2 adaptation?
No (and that’s a bad thing)
I suspected they’d never be so brave! Typical Sega cowards…
Just to echo CascadeOfLight, No.
sobbing
Its not :(
Woulda gone too hard
To sleepy for a joke answer so I’ll say the boring answer: the studio probably decided butt rock wasn’t popular enough
The corollary to this is that all of the vocal themes for the games of the 2010s are almost universally bad… Sega why…
The Sonic Colors one is particularly bad. Colors was probably the last 3D Sonic I playedI mean, all vocal Sonic tracks are bad, but I can laugh at how cheesy Toot Toot Sonic Warrior and Live and Learn are. The 2010s ones were just kind of normal boring pop songs
Hey at least that open world Sonic game had some interesting screamo emo songs apparently
I will withhold my views on Sonic Colours as a game but agree about the theme

I hear that about Frontiers a lot, but it only just got cracked so I haven’t tried it yet. Maybe this winter?

Is what they’d say… but I miss

૮(˶╥︿╥)ა
Because Sonic’s main cultural impact is inflation furry porn now instead of creating 3 halfway okay platformers 40 years ago.
They can hardly afford enough money to run the air pump going straight into knuckles balloon knot nowadays.
How dare you make this claim, Shadow the Hedgehog toilet transformation art has much greater cultural impact than the inflation furry porn.
I hate that I know what you are talking about
Nobody can out-shitpost me when it comes to horrible porn

Sonic and the Black Knight was the last one
I’m assuming you’ve memory-holed Sonic Forces. Sonic Frontiers’ music fits too, it was a different genre, but 100% the same soul.
But I do miss Crush 40. Apparantly there’s a lawsuit between them and Sega and accusations of being underpaid, so that relationship doesn’t seem to have ended well.
I played like five hours of Forces, and per my other comment

I keep hearing about Frontiers but it’s not a 2010s Sonic game and also doesn’t have a kickass intro. I’m ready for it to be cool though. I recall the lawsuit, I thought it got settled at some point but
we’re never getting Johnny Gioeli again are weI played like five hours of Forces
Oh, so you beat the game!
Bit of an aside but “make your deviantart sonic oc real” is such a slam dunk great idea and I still can’t believe sonic team fucked it up as badly as they did.
Yea…
To me Forces is the end of a trilogy comprised of it, Colours and also Lost World, which, there are game elements of Lost World I like but holy shit why are these games so drained of charm??? Like what happened to the studio that used to make Shadow the Hedgehog and stuff??
The Sonic Sound Team had rock songs for Sonic Frontiers like Undefeatable. Its not the same genre but it’s the same vein.
Then Sonic x Shadow Generations had some remixes in there befitting the game if memory serves.
And here’s where I learn that Un-gravitify is 19 years old jeez.
But they still kind of do. I don’t think it’s fair to say the rock soundtrack isn’t a core part of the experience
I really want Frontiers to be a full return to form for Sonic but I’m tryna keep my expectations way down.
And here’s where I learn that Un-gravitify is 19 years old
The spinoff games sometimes have chill themes, Free from Sonic Free Riders is okay too.
four words: woke left
Is sonic and the black knight worth playing?
I really liked it when it came out. A lot of Sonic games get lost in the sauce trying to do too much, but BK is in the camp of “do one thing decently well for a decently long campaign”. The English voice acting grates on me in the worst way but you can set it to Japanese so that stops being an issue fast, plus if the gameplay clicks for you iirc there’s a ton of side content to play. My general take is that Sonic games are better than people give them credit for and I think SatBK is a solid 7/10
This post has been FACT CHECKED and CONFIRMED TRUE by REAL JUN’ICHI KANEMARU PATRIOTS
Not reeeeeally? The game is hugely oversold online, pitched as being a great story but it has maaaybe ten cutscenes tops? It is better to play than Secret Rings, but the onrails sword combat is still kind of bad. It’s over in under five hours if you’re good though. I think if you miss the 4kids voice cast, or more broadly when Sonic was ‘cringe and anime’ it might be an okay afternoon. It has less charm than Adventure 2 and less brave ambition than Shadow '05.
does it need motion controls to play? If not i’ll check it out
If you play it in Dolphin you can map the wiimote waggles to a button press, but natively it requires motion to play yea :/
oh wait I forgot about that…. brb starting a new twilight princess play through
(yes I know I could play the wii u or gc version but the former doesn’t emulate well on my device and the latter looks worse)
Because Sonic 2006 ate shit, and now, Sega is too scared to do anything even resembling it.
They didn’t exactly eject Toyoma Ohtani despite his leading the sound team on that game… I do agree though that the 2006 was kind of the beginning of the end, because it was ammo for the type of people who hated what Sonic games had become since the Dreamcast’s launch. Which is sad…
Sonic 2006 had some good ideas. It was just rushed. If they gave more time to polish it, it would probably be a lot more fondly remembered.
Nowadays there’s an entire subsection of the fanbase committed to the defense of Sonic 2006 and insisting that the media was unfair to it, which I mean I do understand the fondness for it. I’d play it over Colours, Forces or honestly even Generations most times.
It has the genuine feel of early 3D Sonic. Like it’s stupid as hell and seems completely unaware of its own stupidity, and that has quite a bit more charm than the “we’re just cartoons, no need to take us seriously” feel of later Sonic.
A Sonic game needs a heavy mixing of sincerity and ambition like that, otherwise it’s no good.
They pissed off Ted Poley and he said trust me and we will escape from the city.
What about sonic racing?
Fair, I wasn’t really into All Stars Racing or Transformed and Crossworlds’ crossover stuff didn’t grab me either, Idk.
