Ok let’s apply that to Biden’s administration.

It acted like COVID magically went away or became the flu, ended COVID relief programs, fought rail unions tooth and nail on a new contract that included improved safety regulations all while the blatant disregard for rail safety was on full display, stood by as the Supreme Court struck down Roe v Wade and made decisions that greatly affected the right of POC and the LGBTQA community, whole heartedly feed an entire country (Ukraine) to the meat grinder to weaken Russia unsuccessfully, and is currently covering Israel’s ongoing genocide of Palestenians by regurgitating Israeli propaganda and providing military and material support.

Wow I really want these people to stick arounddean-smile

To be a bit more seriously, I’m not from the US but I’d be very careful. The MAGA movement might very well start rounding up trans people and whoever else they don’t like. Something like a “Kristallnacht”. They absolutely could turn the US into a fascist dictatorship. I hate the neoliberals too but from a tactical viewpoint you really should vote for Biden.

The U.S. is already a fascist dictatorship. It just has the luxury to have multiple parties of fascists. If trans people were to be rounded up, neither party would be interested in doing anything to stop it. We know this because literal children are regularly sent to privatized behavioral or conversion therapy camps that are essentially prisons, and neither party is very invested in shutting those down. So fuck off with your moralizing. Biden isn’t strategic, nor is he vegetables, he’s just a different brand of pop.

The US is currently a fascist dictatorship. Both parties in the US function as a single unit uniparty. Don’t forget they repealed abortion rights under a democrat. The US legislator (Congress) is corrupted and captured and their supreme court is not different from Iran with religious fundamentalists that have lifetime appointments with power to review any case law. It literally doesn’t matter. The Kristallnacht is coming and no voting will stop it, just like voting never stopped the German Nazi’s. Is idea here to just have the Democrats win every election forever?

While the GOP is definitely become fascist, the US and the democrats is a neoliberal plutocracy, it’s different from fascism (= a belief in inequality based on an mythological and essentialized identity). Say what you want about capitalism but they don’t give a shit about your identity as long as they can sell you things or exploit you. Fascists don’t like capitalism because it’s too egalitarian - they want inequality and classes based on identity not money.

If you’re an accelerationist you should also consider what the better tactical choice is to bring about a socialist revolution. Fascism is very stable and difficult to overthrow without the support of the military, and the technology to surveil and control people is much more advanced than in e.g. Nazi Germany. And you didn’t have much of a resistance there either.

their supreme court is not different from Iran

I love the comparison to Iran’s guardian council. To be fair their model of democracy / theocracy is build around resisting regime change / coup attempts from imperialist influences.

The entire point of fascism is class collaboration/subordination for the benefit of the capital owners, to suppress labor and stabilize falling profit rates

It’s precisely the reason Hitler was backed to the hilt by German industrialists

Brain-dead liberals have always confused certain protectionist measures used by fascist regimes as “anti-capitalist” because many of them have been completely blinkered by the exploded neoclassical conception of capital accumulation, while they ignore the unprecedented privatization campaigns of every fascist regime

Liberals are forced to believe in a fantasy version of capitalism and then stare in disbelief when the fascists turn out to be more efficient capitalists than they ever were

Fascists absolutely want classes based on money. Fascism was devised as the union of labor and capital. Mussolini and the Syndicalists wanted to use national identity to “resolve” class contradictions, not make classes into national identities.

            fascism

            egalitarian

Fascism is an ideology that is practically defined by a constant search for an Other, an outgroup, an underclass it can use as scapegoat. It is literally in a perpetual state of eating its own tail

Even allowing the distinction, the Democrats fuel fascism by funding far right Republican candidates and fear-mongering over immigrants, China, etc. Capitalists will typically side with fascism to defeat socialism because it allows (most of) them to maintain their status. And fear-mongering about foreigners gives them a scapegoat and distracts from domestic problems, while justifying the corrupt military-industrial complex which allows transferring public funds into private hands. The Democrats are 100% fascist enablers.

Hindenburg was representing an institution more like the supreme court, similar to how the liberals on the supreme court in the US are currently doing mental gymnastics to allow an insurrectionist to run for president, he allowed Hitler to grab power. I get the joke but it’s actually relevant in another way - failure to oppose fascism by well meaning (or edgy) people.

The fact that you would even say something so silly implies that facisism is as unthreating to you as it was to them. In your failed attempt to defend voting for liberals to “prevent fascism” you explained exactly why voting for liberals will do nothing to prevent fascism just like it failed in Germany.

Hindenburg put Hitler up as a choice for chancellor and then appointed him chancellor.

That’s a little different than what you’re suggesting.

Throughout the history of the Weimar Republic there are many examples of presidents using their emergency powers in big ways.

I think saying that president is a figurehead position with no real power is pretty indefensible. We have well documented examples of presidents wielding lots of power and the specific one we’re talking about famously used his political power to put Hitler next in line.

It’s doubly damning that you’ve brought this up as a defense of voting for Biden when one extremely shallow but nonetheless true reading of the events after Hindenburgs election is “don’t elect senile politicians to office if you want to defeat fascism!”

Hey, we can apply longtermism too (and it won’t even be that long, maybe a few decades) and say “That’s unfortunately pretty likely no matter the timeline or specifically who gets elected when.” Maybe if it happens in 2025-6 instead of 2045-6 there’ll be less people around to genocide, and we might get a resolution to it quicker.

The US is certain to become a blatantly authoritarian state down the road, it is completely unsustainable and dependent on militarily destroying other places to launder money to its ruling class, then extracting surplus value from those places in the aftermath. It’s currently a heavily obfuscated fascist state, at least to most observers just struggling to get by under its propaganda and the arcane systems it and its collaborators have created.

Corrupt politicians are ordered by their major bribers who is in the ADMINISTRATION.

Citigroup chose Obama’s 2008 cabinet, WikiLeaks document reveals

Trump was also told by his major bribers who to hire. For instance Renaissance Technologies who paid Trump $16 million, and John Bolton $3 million.

They also paid Hillary $16 million and remember that whole Pied Piper thingy with the cordinating with the media and the DNC propping Trump up making him “viable” yea

That kind of thing is important to understand when your entire job revolves around making jokes about American society and politics, and he just did not get it.

Pretty funny because he actually understands what he’s talking about. A lot of his South African specials have aged really poorly in hindsight though, especially when he went through his edgy phase in the early 2010s. Most infamous clip from that was when he made fun of striking miners. Lots of sexist and antisemitic jokes about Jewish women as well, but the latter was limited to text based social media like Twitter and never made an appearance on his comedy specials, as far as I remember.

Biden has been an incredibly competent president and there are hours upon hours and hours of him speaking cogently.

This is Jon jumping on a narrative that just is based on patent fabrication.

I have to ask you: if the clips of Biden gaffes were coming from Fox, would we all be taking them at face value? Is it possible to conceive that the same kind of thing is happening with other outlets? It’s wholesale fabrication of a narrative. It’s really harrowing to watch.

The man regularly gives the State of the Union for fuck’s sake! We watch him speak for literal hours!

And yes, Jon throws in a little disclaimer at the end to the effect of “I’m not saying that these candidates aren’t vibrant and capable.” The issue with there is that he JUST spent fifteen minutes doing just that.

I grew up watching Stewart and his work has helped shape my worldview and help me sniff out BS but this is really disappointing.

I get that anti-Trump comedy is super stale and he wants to come out of the gates fresh and with punchy material, but it’s just so… South Park circa 2002.

They do have a point though about the administration being a big part of an election. But sadly for this person (and the other folks that will use this line of thought), I think that a very large amount of people that are anti-Biden are not fans of his team either. So they are just furthering the arguments of even the anti-Biden Dems that are becoming more and more embarrassed of the party they have blindly supported for so long. Which does open some gaps for leftists to maybe at least flip to Green votes for President, or at least start following the lead of protest movements like the pro-Palestine/ceasefire ones.

But we have seen how much rot the “blue no matter who” crowd has just ignored for my entire life from late 80’s to now. The masses have been taught to be loud but not know how to do anything. Being fair Republicans aren’t much better but have learned how to scare their established leaders here and there.

American electoralism has come down to this. Each state has an independent election to elect formal electors, each of which casts a vote for president, a man who will be controlled and held up as a figure head by his own administration, and our chances at democratic influence lie in somehow signaling through 3 layers of indirection to influence the decisions of the unelected administration officials. Right.

It seems more recent, at least to me

In years past, they were fine with criticizing their leadership, they even kind of enjoyed it; doing so helped make them look more ‘educated’ and ‘impartial’ than their conservative counterparts. Something changed with Trump, ‘vote blue no matter who’ really got taken to heart, and now making even the most milquetoast criticism is seen as an indictment on you and an indicator that you are stupid or a Russian asset or a conservative

Throwback to this lib leaning into it re: Gaza

Truths are complicated and challenging. We don’t have to take sides or teams; although I know it’s difficult given then times we live in, where we feel the pressure to take sides given how fast we are bombarded with information. Join me and others in the effort to be comfortable with cognitive dissonance, and remember that regardless of any political leaning or nationality, we are all connected by our common humanity. Let’s not antagonize eachother. Good luck in your search for answers.

imagine seeing what’s going on in Gaza and being able to say this. they must be totally empty inside

        • just abdicating from humanity. like i can’t imagine someone who really believes in the zionist narrative not taking a side? SOMEONE is being genocided here, right? if you don’t think its Palestinians than its gotta be israelis right?

scientific evidence that it is possible for humans to survive without a spine.

I have a “friend” who’s exactly like that. Taking a side might upset people on the other side so better not to. “There are lots of bad things happening in the world, I can’t care about all of them”. Proceeds to care about none of them.

            • I know it’s weird but among all the other better reasons to despise anti-abortion activists, I always felt like, if you genuinely believe that abortion is murder and that hundreds of thousands of innocent fully human babies were being murdered every year, its shocking cowardice that they aren’t firebombing clinics every day. I’d like to think that if I was convinced that there was a building in my community that murdered children all day every day that I would do something about it?

Odds are there’s some weapons component factory in your area, given how they like to spread those out everywhere. And there’s certainly a prison and a police station. And it’s pretty rare for any of those to burn down. Idk where I’m going with this, not trying to be edgy or fedpost, just saying people lived normal lives next to the concentration camps, ya know? Cognitive dissonance or willful ignorance or whatever it is, seems to be a pretty strong force, I don’t see why the right wouldn’t also be able to believe something and completely ignore it at the same time.

                • yeah I hear that. prioritizing personal safety or comfort over action isn’t unrelatable lol, there are things I believe are terrible that I don’t take direct action against in my community. personally I’m going to wait until I’m old before I start seriously considering assassinating politicians or whatever.

but people did firebomb abortion clinics and get away with it at one point. they close at night so it would be relatively easy. also lots of people believe that these unbaptized babies don’t just die but go to hell so that’s a whole other level lol.

still tho I do understand what you are saying. I guess I could have the same opinion about vegans who don’t blow up slaughterhouses right. its just something I always felt about abortion activists probably because I already hard then lol

What’s up with liberals knee jerk urge to avoid absorbing contradictory/ conflicting information?

liberals tend to view politics through the lens of personal morality. you’re a good person if you support democrats. the inverse of that is if the democrat in office is bad, they view that as their own personal failing for “picking wrong” so it causes cognitive dissonance that causes them to keep doubling down.

In their defense that rally to restore sanity shit was pretty much the high water mark for libs preferring to be smug to winning electoral power.

But I’d be willing to bet that’s not the argument they’re making.

I would guess that he was maybe hoping (foolishly) to freak out the Dem leadership and elected folks to wake up and break from what they always have done. Which is just always bow to conservatives and act like “bipartisanship” and “norms” are sacred above doing shit their own voters want/need. They saw the way Bernie and people like Stewart are able to get people jazzed-up and even inspire. And they went out of their way to undo all of it in the name of moderate/centrist can kicking. So done with the “we hear you and see you, but our hands are tied by insert excuse” excuse. At this point anyone that thinks Dem leaders are “fixable” and can in any way be trusted to fight for anything are just in the worst levels of denial.
