advertising should be banned
once I told someone I never see ads because I have adblock everywhere and they asked me ‘how do you know what to buy?’
I didn’t know how to respond

‘how do you know what to buy?’

That fucking line.
IIRC someone somewhere said that Amerikkka is a pig nation with pig people. And here is a prime example. The piggies actually love their slop!

I’m housesitting for my Mom this week, and it’s a real novelty to see advertising. It’s honestly more entertaining than most of the TV shows. Outside of her house, I haven’t seen an ad in years.
Watching the news with my parents and seeing ICE ads on broadcast TV was an eye opener
ICE ads on broadcast…
God has grown tired of us…
I report them on LinkedIn for what is the category, extremist or violent content or some such. I don’t think I’ve seen a response but at least the ad disappears for a while.
It’s so weird going to someone else’s house and seeing ads. These people don’t even notice that a third of the slop they’re exposing themselves to is just ads, and not even good, convincing or well-made ones. Ever been to someone’s house and they always have the TV on at low volume, ads and all? They can’t even be alone with their thoughts in their own house when other people are around to talk to.
Yeah, I’ve been to my parents’ house

and not even good, convincing or well-made ones.
I could rant about this for longer than I have the time for. If you’re going to make me watch your fucking bullshit, at least make it good. So many ads makes me not want to buy the thing. I get it: it’s not easy coming up with material in a soul-crushing industry. But maybe just don’t air anything at all.
Right? I’ve worken in marketing (with a Bill Hicks attitude towards it), and better ads just sell more product. Bad ads are just lazy, and people tune them out. People don’t read ads. They read things they’re interested in, and sometimes they’re ads.
This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard hands down.
trying to imagine what it’s like to lack any semblance of an inner life like that. it must be so bleak to be that person

CW: Suicidal language
That line produced this response in my brain. “Because of what you just said to me, I now know the only thing I’ll ever need to buy again is one bullet”. Please know, I’m not actually suicidal. I’m just very morbid and sometimes not a fun person to be around irl.
People actually get excited for ads. “Hey poors! Money please!” Actually excites people.
Every time I see an ad I die a little on the inside especially if they try to be “funny”.
The worst ads are the ones with the self-aware “I’m not funny but isn’t it funny that I know I’m not funny?” -type “”““humor.””“”
Ironically bad advertising is still just bad advertising.
“HoW dO yOu KnOw WhAt To BuY?”
Oh my fucking God….wealth is wasted on the wealthy. Why are you enjoying all the slop porky is selling you? Porky doesn’t even buy things. Income inequality is bad in no small part because porky doesn’t buy into his own consoom product bullshit. Like, first of all, how do they even have money to buy things?
Besides skin pill A B c that may make you develop sucidal thoughts to maybe visibility improving my Ass lining pill XY Z that may make you develop sucidal thoughts…sometime I have to consult my primary care physician and mental health therapist on the by weekly rent or food question.
I’ll just allow it for cultural events like concerts, exhibits, stuff like thati think there’s some kind of distinction there between advertising (announcements) and advertising (marketing) but i’m not familiar enough with that topic to elaborate very much
So much of the economy is selling ads for things hardly anyone seems to be buying.
it feels like a form of businesses speculating on themselves
sounds bubbly
billboards showing an elegantly plated dog turd
I play stupid phone games without a paid turn-off-all-ads version and the ads that aren’t for similar games are for the ad system itself. The hours of ads I’ve watched this year have had a potential payout to the ad buyers of maybe $20. How does this system keep going?
I’ve spent my entire adult life attempting to avoid advertisements, all the way back to the original Tivo, and now these useless cocksuckers think I’m going to put up with this dogshit all of a sudden? I’d rather go back to a flip phone.
Agree. But cocksucker as an insult? Come on dude, do you not appreciate getting head? 😔 Smdh
there can be no blowjobs without cocksuckers. that’s dialectics baybee
Base and Supersucksure
Sucker and suckee
Flip phones also have ads now, at least KaiOS ones
The enshittification will continue
Until your purchasing increases… At which point enshitification will increase!!
“subsidize costs”
Costs for the capitalists, not for the consumer.
Yeah. Nobody seems to understand when I say that companies only do this shit because it makes consumers spend more money, not less
Unfair to the payOR, not to the payEE.

I mean it’s literally their best effort to pass the cost on to the consumer.
I remember a couple of years ago Nothing was a company that supposedly brought some fresh new ideas to the smartphone market. Guess we found out what the ideas were.
Nothing’s post was upfront about the “razor-thin margins” the company has to operate on to keep up with major players like Apple and Google, and said that both Lock Glimpse and “pre-installed partner apps” would be a way to continue to hit the mid-budget price point it’s become known for.
Wow, this just keeps happening under capitalism for some reason! Consolidation until only a few of the largest players remain.
Nothing is just iphone with led’s.
I know their phones aren’t actually anything special, but the smartphone business is so cooked people thought having some blinking lights was novel.
The slab is pretty much perfect nowadays. Can’t really innovate on it. The only real “innovative” thing in Smartphones have been Folding Phones but I ain’t buying one unless it has a lifetime warranty for all kinds of damages.
Finally. I love finding out about new exciting products with affordable prices!
it’s fun how all the reviews are worthless fake slop
Some smartphones being Android phones running Nothing OS 4.0 just FYI because I was like “waow what cellphone company is willing to piss off their users like this” lol
Carl Pei speedrunning the enshittification of Nothing. Glad that I never bought any of their crap.
I was about to buy one of their headphone models. But they can eat my whole ass now.
Your WHOLE ASS? In this economy?
I’m very fortunate.
Motorola and OnePlus as well.
This sucks so bad. I bought this phone earlier this year because it was the only one in the shop without ads/bloatware, with a track record of not doing ads/bloatware. Next time I go to the UK I think I might end up not leaving it
Do they pay rent and electricity for living on your lock screen
we are living under capitalism you gotta pay rent and bills and maybe I could pay my rent and bills with that hehe… he…
they’re saying that they do subsidize the hardware cost. I remember a xiaomi phone that was pretty great value, with the caveat that it was full of ads by default, though you could turn off/hide all of it if you toggled 20 different settings. not sure if Redmi/poco is still doing that model though, but I’m not against it
Nothing is a really cringe poser brand though that I want to see less of.
Bro, I’m the one keeping that thing powered and on me. FUCK off
Also paying for the data that the ads are using
some smartphones
For now, until they force it on everyone and offer a $20/month plan to remove them.
In a couple of years maybe.
Pay 50$ to use your OS without ads, and an extra 5$ to remove preinstalled apps.
I’m not sure it will take that long; Kindles already work on this model.
If you have no lock screen, you have no lock screen ads.Nothing’s whole thing is minimalism and this kind of messes with that aesthetic, ads and partner apps are the kind of thing I would expect from a really low-end manufacturer
I thought about getting a nothing phone at one point since they seemed kinda cool. This shit makes me glad I didn’t bother lol.
Maybe it’s time to look at custom ROMs or Linux phones. It’s been a few years. How are they faring?
Linux phones are still a long ways out. I daily drove a PinePhone with Arch for roughly 2 years, honestly wouldn’t recommend.
There are some pretty neat custom ROM’s. The peak is still GrapheneOS, which for now requires Google Pixel devices. DivestOS (RIP) was really good, and supported a ton of devices. The other ROM’s tend to be less good, for a variety of reasons.
There are a few (very small) makers of linux phones. I think there’s a new “Ubuntu Touch” device out now. Pinephone also makes a linux device, if they’re still in business that is.
The problem is that linux phones don’t have the apps available, nor the development support to maintain them. The whole reason smart phones are useful is because of apps that have large user bases and functionality. Although, I supposed you could just do everything in the browser.
My advice is to take the SD/SIM card out of your phone, throw it into the ocean, and just use a flip phone instead.
Semi-ignorant take incoming: could we see some sort of Linux for phone where the Android apps we must have (banking apps, etc.) can run through a sort of dockerized android OS and be self-contained for the user? I feel like the processors can reach that point where the experience feels the same to the end user while VMs/containers are doing the heavy lifting in the background.
It seems to have been tried, with seemingly mixed results:

The general consensus seems to be that the phones are largely still in beta and not really suitable for mainstream use yet.

Ok that’s 0.5% of phone users sorted
I’d totally do this as long as I can still use the bullshit apps required to do stuff like go to a concert
Or use your bank :( my bank will always send a 2fa code to the phone app
better to just not have a phone anymore. who needs em? if you need to contact me, write a letter
lmao
