Resort staff have been very helpful, bringing medicine and extra blankets, but even getting up to use the bathroom has become a Herculean task and I can’t keep anything down more solid than tea lol

Most likely culprit was a salad, apparently uncooked vegetables are a big risk factor.
You sure it wasn’t a Banh Mi?

Well, it certainly wasn’t the cones
Scones would never
you don’t win friends with salad
You’d all be my friends if you tried my roasted corn salad :kitty-birthday-sad:
Really? I thought it was safe to eat most veggies raw?
Only if well washed. Especially good at keeping bacteria on them and eating raw without being washed basically brings it directly to you
see this is why I never wash my vegetables, i’m constantly training my immune system like I’m goku in the hyperbolic time chamber
I got an intestinal amoeba one time. You cannot get immunity to a parasite
What if you’re built different tho
Good luck. I had to go the hospital and get IV fluids for 28 hours
Shoulda said something before, you’re good
It is and it isn’t a terrible strategy
Nah, in locations lacking widely available public water treatment veggies are a problem because they are often washed in contaminated water. If you are visiting a developing nation do not eat anything that hasn’t been heated to boiling temps, drink from sealed bottles, and do not have anything with ice.
Also …if you’ve had a questionable meal drink some Pepto right after. It can really help kill bad gut bacteria, especially ones that cause diarrhea like e coli.
cold foods are a big danger because they need to be handled properly and kept clean
if you have a poorly trained cook who scratches his ass and touches food that’s going to be cooked, that’s gross but at least the cooking will kill most of any bacteria introduced
if the same poorly trained cook scratches his ass and prepares a salad, well…
this is in addition to any bacteria or parasites the ingredients might have been exposed to while being grown or harvested
Not to mention your digestive/immune system may not be tuned to accommodate local pathogens when traveling.
Once several months ago I was helping out an elderly neighbor who told about going #2 while working in the family garden as a child, to not have to walk all the way to the outhouse (yes, they are that old) so they could get the crop in before dark. I was so gobsmacked I didn’t ask if or how they cleaned themselves or their hands or if anyone got sick.
that is a really weird thing to just bring up and tell a person, I’m not gonna lie (them telling you not you telling me)
also their “family garden” must have been fuckin’ huge if they needed to worry about getting the crop in before dark
but yeah I think that’s why there are so many frequent recalls for e. coli contaminated lettuces, greens, etc. (not people pooping in the fields but bad hygiene)
it’s actually because of the animal waste they use on the fields
I mean you brought up a cook scratching their backside. Idk how big the garden was, I wasn’t even born then. I can tell you a lot of family gardens now aren’t in the yard in my town, more on family owned property a road or two over, to keep rodents and snakes away from the homes.
Eta: underpaid farm workers absolutely will go wherever.
no yea I get it I meant them deciding to tell you, lol, like I just dump my life on people because what else am I gonna do with it, but I still know it’s kinda weird to be like “so I took a shit in my family’s garden when I was a kid because like fuck walking to the outhouse, am i right” yknow
I get you. People tell weird stuff sometimes, I suppose being elderly lends to it too. I have neighbors who know me one minute and ask who I am five minutes into the conversation. You get to where you just remind them without interrupting the flow, you know?
