I came here in November of last year looking for an alternative to reddit, and in that time, this space has transformed to look more like reddit than I ever expected it to become.

I don’t know what I expected, but it wasn’t just reddit all over again with a smaller userbase.

Block users and communities frequently. There’s no need to rub shoulders with people you dislike.

The reason this place sucks is because of the influx of poisoned minds coming from Reddit, and they bring all their surly immature bullshit with them.

What communities are you using? I haven’t been running into these issues and I’ve been here for a couple of years.

However, there are a few notorious instances and communities that do just that.

    1. Start your own instance and set your own rules.

    2. At some point there will be a post complaining about your abusive moderation.

    3. ???

    4. Profit.

This place is not a paradise but is free. If your content crash with other mods rules, start your own instance.

I think the larger instances kind of end up being quite similar to Reddit. Same pithy comments, same inability to self-reflect, same weird self-assurance that they are in the majority, regardless of subject.

It takes a lot of curation but I think it’s possible to find the social media you want on Lemmy.

This is bad side of anyone are free to open their own server. They think being instance admin means they are free to do what they want.

I never quite understand why people have these high expectations from lemmy. It’s just another social media site, why should people here be any different?

For now the silver lining is that lemmy is still at a size where you can salvage it blocking a couple hundred people and communities.

Reddit was distinct from social media. It was a forum, not a hellsite. Lemmy was supposed to be another go at that, mostly on a technical level, partially on a cultural level, with decentralization fixing a lot of late reddit’s problems.

Even now - it’s distinct from what I’d call social media.

            Despite the admins best effort.

            Is Fark social media?

I wouldn’t think so, but reddit feels closer. But not the strictict definition. Similar to the YouTube debate tbh.

This has been internet community stuff since internet, honestly. Small websites run by a dozen school friends can wind up with this. Reddit, from my understanding, was always rife with it.

The decentralized nature of Lemmy means a lot of people curating their own communities. Walled gardens are a feature, not a bug. As long as the federation aspects are held together the ecosystem can self correct by letting those communities isolate, either internally or externally.

Just try not to take the walls personally, even when they are. We all run into them sometimes.

With the exception of .ml (if you haven’t been banned there at least once, well are you even trying? /j ) I’m good IMO.

You and I have had very different experiences. I don’t mean to invalidate yours however.

There’s some rogue admins and mods, sure, but I haven’t come up against them much in over two years and it’s not like I’ve been walking on eggshells.

Where have you experienced this the most? Certain instances or mods?

Edit: and fwiw, in my eyes it was clear from the beginning that dot world set out to be reddit on the fediverse

And I remain relatively neutral on this. It’s their hardware, resources, and time. I didn’t have to sign up there.

Well sorry this hasn’t worked out. Between june 2023 to aug 2023 this site turned to be more like reddit in some ways and less of a niche site… in both good ways and bad.

If you want a forward path of action from here, maybe make a thread to brainstorm how it can be better. Perhaps define a space that fits your philosophy and see if there’s a match with something existing.

See beehaw.org. They are disconnected from lemmy.world and their main rule is to be(e) nice. It’s one rule, it’s subjective to avoid rules lawyering, and fairly applied, you get some leeway with warnings if your behaviour is problematic.

Just remember that mods are unpaid volunteers like Reddit, so the ones dedicated enough to donate their time and energy to mod tend to be terminally online. They take a lot of abuse from people and that fatigue grows over time and with an increasing userbase.
