Former British General Sir Richard Shirreff, a former NATO Deputy Supreme Commander Europe

    The part that matters:

Writing for the Daily Mail, he added: “And, in this instance, to show our intent – that means being open to the prospect of European forces fighting a ground war against the US in Greenland. > “This would, of course, spell the end for NATO, an alliance which has kept us safe for coming on 77 years and an organisation in which I proudly served as deputy supreme allied commander in Europe for three years, after leaving the Army. > “And so, as Trump continues to threaten and goad, my message to European leaders is this: America is no longer our ally but a predator and a bully. > “Stick together and prepare for war. Because the only way to deal with bullies is to push back."

I still think none of this matters. The military people will say this and assess the situation correctly, the politicians however will most likely capitulate as Europe can be destroyed economically without any escalation to military conflict at all. Military conflict is only a possibility if Europe can weather the economic attack, it can’t.

Stick together and prepare for war. Because the only way to deal with bullies is to push back.

As an aside, I’ve had interactions with multiple libs regarding this Greenland hubbub and they ALL use that framing.

How can these people have such an infantile view of world politics? It’s so fucking aggravating. Real life is not like a school playground spat you imbeciles!

It’s basically the only thing that libs learned from the great man telling of putting the entire of ww2 on Hitler. In almost all schools everywhere it’s hammered home that appeasement was a mistake.

The decision to teach that in schools as the mistake of ww2 has led to liberal decisions in the modern day.

completely agree with this. the crudely reductionist view of everything, boiling it down to the level of inter-personal disputes. pretty sick of it, tbh.

It’s because Capitalism. This is what this system shapes people into. Instead of dialectical materialism you get some shit like Rational choice model, game theory, in school you don’t do critical thinking you do taxonomy mostly. Even if you do get sent to a private school they’re not gonna teach you anything out of the ordinary they’ll just go more in depth and teach you how to exploit people more efficiently, unless perhaps it’s like a Marxist school and idk how many of those exist in Europe

Yes I don’t think that’s particularly important though. It’s a shit paper yes, it doesn’t make what he’s saying something they have invented though.

What it does tell me is that even the right wing media in the UK are going to take an anti-US position on this, or at least that’s what this is right now.

I do think it’s important. Not that it takes anything away from your point, in fact, I think it adds to it. If the most jingoistic of all gutter-trash journalists are writing like this, I think that’s quite significant.

they will unite again when Trump is done, heck knowing Trump and the subservience of Europe/Canada/Japan and South Korea, if Trump says something nice to them, they’ll love him again. Atlantacists will always see China as the primary adversary.
