Don’t be (too) ashamed. What’s the slop you’re getting into this week? Games, movies, tv shows, etc.

I’ll go first I suppose. I’m watching Burn Notice. I’m on season 3 episode 3. Some of the dialogue is so painful I’m embarrassed to watch it but then I power thru it and finally get to a high quality action scene. Former spy works w former girlfriend, his mom, and a fair weather friend to solve some problems in sunny Florida. It’s completely believable and socially redeeming.

So let’s hear it.

i actually stand on burn notice, it’s campy but fun and the cia is maybe at it’s most correct portrayal in slopular media: an evil cabal that you can never get untangled from. also bruce campbell, who’s just a real treat.

I highly recommend the series Hanna, it’s like John Wick action, the CIA and the USA are unequivocally evil antagonists and they are explicitly using their secret super assassin program to plant child soldier sleep agents in places to take out left wing and anti-imperialist agitators and just regular environmental activists that are not even militant (though these are only noticeable if you freeze frame on a specific dossier from one of the later seasons that is otherwise just a generic intel plot device).

My wife and I will randomly say this to each other whenever a phrase brings it up “damn I burned the toast” “when you’re burned…”

Ashley the VPOTUS screaming on the phone (presumably at Zelensky) “it’s your own fault you got invaded! You were wearing too short of a skirt!” It was amusing on some level but my god was it a reminder of the vapid lib mindset.

You’ve got this evil admin that is basically a coup of the “real” America where the fascist ruler is totally hands-off international affairs (the horror) and who in many ways (some of them pretty accurate) is a stand-in for Trump. But not aiding Ukrainian fascists is painted as this evil thing to do here, using the trope that epitomizes victim-blaming where the victim is widdle smol bean Ukraine against the vicious Russians.

I’m pretty sure in this silly world of their’s NATO doesn’t even exist since the US has all the supes, so Russia wouldn’t have had any reason to invade. I can’t fault them for not going into that kind of geopolitical nuance of course, but still, the way they do portray it is nothing more than “Russia just did that” no doubt because Putler, and their method for showing the audience how evil and narcissistic this Homelander-led admin is, is to show how uncaring they are of poor Ukraine’s plight, and how flat out unwilling they are to send military aid to Ukraine. That’s what is supposed to show us they’re obviously the baddies. They’re so evil and incompetent, they’re victim-blaming Ukraine! And they do this multiple times.

Whoever the showrunners are, they clearly have a deep and abiding hardon for Ukraine.

I feel like a thing that kind of has to be addressed here is that the early seasons focused on the horror that would be throwing a privatised military at foreign conflicts, especially when said military was a bunch of superpowered untrained manchildren who do tiktok dances. And now we are supposed to see it as horrifying when Homelander (And Ashley) pull them out.

Yeah they’re forcing some stuff this season without any relevant plot points. Like when they stomped out that Nazi, that was great, but at least they had a plot to frame it around.

That’s mostly because the comics were written in the Bush era, as things have gone on and they’ve diverged more they’ve incorporated modern politics instead.

  • 30 Rock. Season 2 for some reason has a lot of queerphobia for some reason and it cleared up in later seasons.

The Jenna Marroni character is legit a shockingly horrible person. But Alec Baldwin’s Jack Donaghy character is a great lampoon of CEO/capitalists. He’s actually based on the real former GE CEO Jack Welch, a particularly egregious historical figure. And honestly, him with Tina Fay and Tracy Morgan are pretty funny.

new star war maul shadow lord, as per usual with these animated shows the plot and writing is all over the place but it’s quite amazingly rendered. i’m talking very nearly Arcane art direction and quality. the team(s?) that do these shows have clearly gotten really really good at this animation style.

i wouldn’t actually recommend it, Maul’s character doesn’t work well without a comedic foil, he’s way too edgy. the heaps of action setpieces are indulgent and overwrought, the stakes are hard to appreciate when the important characters die in other media.

super pretty to look at though

I think almost everything on YT is consumption porn of some sort. It’s short clips/vids with the relevant subjects equivalent of porno moaning - food influencers groaning about the cheese pull or the crumb shot, mechanics hooting about performance car parts, gun guys jizzing their pants over the newest elephant gun that shoots a caliber larger than a Foster’s beer oil can.

It’s all maximized for oohs and aaaahs, everything has to be slick AF, and ready to be ogled appropriately. YouTube is a net negative for us as humans. The positives are well outweighed by the downsides.

such an arc of the development of youtube content in the microcosm of one man. i remember when the channel was a few months old and it was just a guy in his kitchen taking a crack at nonsense foods dreamed up by hollywood writers.

  • My partner has an extremely stressful job dealing with extraordinarily dysfunctional people and their problems (which my partner is also responsible for resolving). When my partner has a particularly stressful day at work, the only thing that can make them feel better is non-dairy ice cream and reality tv. Tonight we ate mint chocolate chip and watched the 90 Day the Other Way Reunion. It was glorious, filthy slop. 10/10. Would recommend.
