The anti-DEI crowd claimed the casting of Elliot Page and Lupita Nyong’o would sink the film.
A personal caveat: While the mental gymnastics of the right-wing are as ridiculous, as they infuriating; it also needs to be said that Christopher Nolan is anything but a leftist. This article here does a good job to delve into Nolan’s political bend.
I think left-wing people should also be upset with this movie as well. Just not for the reasons the right are.
Specifically because Christopher Nolan had gotten permission from Italy to use environmentally protected locations for filming, and then proceeded to dump plastic skeletons into them. But good luck finding any non-Italian new outlets talking about this.
I have also heard a lot of leftwing critiques that seem compelling.
I love Ulysses and James Joyce I can’t take a modern movie butchering this old story with shallow boring masculine hero narratives that crowd out reflection on any other aspect of the human condition.
That’s pretty shit. Hollywood is terrible for extorting tax breaks out of countries they want to fill in and then not even even doing that much for the economy and tourism, and Nolan should pay for clean up of this out of all the profits they’re making.
Nolan pushed hard to fuck over pre vaccine COVID restrictions to get people to spend 2 and a Half hours in a closed space so his film can be shown in cinemas.
Watch his films in the shittiest form factor possible.
The difference between cosplaying as a fascist, which western consumers tend to despise, and actually behaving like one, which those same consumers reward with open wallets and high praise.
Nolan has alienated more than a few A-list actors with his directing style. He’s got a work-product which constantly glazes militarism, valorizes authoritarianism, and takes itself far too seriously to afford room for a bit of humor. After that, he’s just Michael Bay minus some explosions. Brilliant cinematographer. But the underlying work never fails to disappoint.
he wasnt the only one, others in hollywood did the same thing. like mythic quest dozens of people got covid early on in the lockdowns, because they were ignoring safety standards.
I’m sure these casting choices were more for publicity boost than for the perfect actor for the perfect supporting role. Prerelease exposure to get non-cinemaphiles talking about the film at all is gold in Hollywood.
Elliot Page as Sinon was…unremarkable. For as much of a deal was made about his casting, he was onscreen for very little time, and his appearance in the underworld was so caked in mud and filth that any subtle emotive work that Page might have been hired for was lost.
Good to know! Thanks
I thought he did a great job. It was a key role in a major plot line. That was what, the C plot? Top three through lines of the movie ain’t bad.

If Nolan wasn’t such a coward we woulda had Jason Mantzoukas as Odysseus. Now there’s an unhinged Greek who placed his infant son befoe a plough to try and get out of the war, pissed off a god and had half his crew turned into pigs
Great point. Jason is my John Odyssey.
Didn’t like the movie all that much, not because of any politics but simply that it actually paid very little focus to his actual adventures on the journey. The last thing I wanted was yet another Hollywood style ‘hero vs mooks’ ending battle.
(Yes, I’m aware the story ended with a slaughter. That’s different from how the movie ended, imo.)
Also, where were the freaking gods?
Noncompete contract with Supergiant.
Of course it does
Reactionary dipshits arent in power. They do not steer culture. There are not more of them than the rest of is. They’re just louder. Fuckem
Oh Zeus, did the angry fools not realize that the Odyssey is set before the social construction of race in a land and time full up with not cishet folk?
Most certainly, because those angry fools are also very stupid.
Dude I’m outta the loop on all this. Will still pirate later.
The short version: The right-wing outrage machine is firing on all cylinders because Nolan dared to cast non-white and queer actors in some minor roles. They are now in the stage where they invent all kinds of conspiracies to claim that the movie is a box office bomb and Elon Musk is now fully on-board too. It’s their usual playbook.
Nolan cast a black woman as a spartan greek who was conceived of a woman raped by a god cosplaying a swan. Right wingers demand historical accuracy, dammit.
i felt like he casted the woman to troll conservatives. i think cons are more upset with elliot page though.
