If you wanted to make a space death beam that penetrates the atmosphere, you can’t use visible light. You need a specific type of laser called a maser that shoots microwaves.

There’s a certain kind of crank that has been talking about orbital weapons for a long time, but frankly they’ve never made sense and they’re never going to make sense because any country that can build an icbm can also build an anti-sattelite missile. The targeting is harder but far from an unsolved problem - there ain’t no stealth in space
Do they even have a space program? How are they gonna put anything in space, then protect it? Correct me if I’m wrong but I think once something is in orbit the math to shoot at it with an ICBM becomes pretty simple.

Yeah that and the fact you could just put all that money and material into missiles instead kinda makes it dubious.
You could, I guess hypothetically, park missiles in low orbit to throw them at someone at a later date and load them with tungsten rods or whatever but it still seems like a massive amount of faff once you factor in radiation/heat sheilding.
