Louis CK is not “reentering” anything. The consequence for his actions was that one of his movies got pulled from distribution, but he was back on the standup circuit within a year and remains a huge draw. Going off of his imdb he’s had 4 stand-up specials since his alleged cancellation, a TV show and a movie, six “web series” and two documentary appearances. Guy has been getting work, far more work than the average successful stand-up comedian.
I would go so far as to say that LCK has been milking this “returning from being cancelled” bit for so long at this point that it’s basically become a part of his brand. It will be 2030 and he’ll be marketing his next hbo special as a “return”.
He took a brief hiatus while the heat died down and came back and hasn’t faced any lasting consequences for his career or popularity beyond a relatively small and inconsequential group of people not wanting to be associated with him or see his shows, who are far outnumbered by the people who will do a bit of ribbing about what he did but who fundamentally just don’t care.
I was just watching Trumbo, where Louis CK plays a screenwriter that actually got cancelled. His character was actually struggling to pay bills, couldnt get any gigs and had to get bailed out by Trumbo. Kind of ironic comparing how his character in the movie got cancelled versus his real life cancellation

The New Yorker writer could get herself a gig doing PR rehabilitation work for creeps and other bottom feeders. The text is puff piece that is at times fawning. Plus it will push some units of Louis C.K.'s new novel “Ingram”.
The comedian Theo Von compared the book, with its drifter child protagonist, to “an emotional ‘Huck Finn.’ ” The themes and the setting also call to mind Cormac McCarthy and William Faulkner; C.K. has said that he was inspired by Flannery O’Connor. But what he’s produced is something closer to the relentless torture of Hanya Yanagihara’s “A Little Life,” minus the beautiful prose and complex characters.

The most riveting part of the episode is when it turns to C.K.’s personal life. “There’s so many times where I just want to come out and tell people, I’m fucking sorry,” C.K. said. “I’m really sorry. I hurt people.” He’s reluctant to speak about his feelings onstage because they’re complicated: “There’s all kind of fears that come up, and I’m very raw in that space.” But he’s going to continue putting himself out there, “because I love the work and I want to share it.”
Finally in the very last paragraph - the text says Von and C.K. are friends.

The coverage is obsequious and Louis’ own statement about this being some kind of journey is self-aggrandizing. I am resigned to the fact that these people keep getting more work but the idea that they are artists experiencing growth is insulting.
Years ago, my colleagues at Business Insider and I tracked YouTuber “cancellation” arcs. What we found is that for many entertainers, “cancellation” actually sets the stage for a redemption arc, one that can raise their profile higher than ever. It wasn’t career-ending. It was fuel.

I bet the New Yorker itself and the writer and Louis all saw it as a win for them. It’s a Goldilocks Zone for all three. The New Yorker generates some controversy but not too much. They wouldn’t have done it a few years ago because it was still too soon. The writer gets the same benefits. Louis - of course - gets some rehabilitation plus a nifty plug for his novel. He’ll surely milk it in his stand up. I can imagine…
