it would be really funny if the second Harry gets to Hogwarts she learns that transitioning is just a potion away and does it and everyone supports her and then everything else happens exactly the same just with a female protagonist.

All the replies are like “but everyone provably loves pre-existing franchise/IP slop!!” and I agree with them all but I do think there’s a chance the vibes on this end up being so off that they end up not finishing out the series. Especially if there’s another corporate shuffle over the course of that time.

Bold of you to predict that slop-loving Millennials won’t absolutely love a 1-for-1 recreation of something they have already seen. The live-action Lion King movie was literally the highest-grossing animated movie of all time when it came out. Plus this new series is now a period piece, taking place in the 1990s with 1990s fashion, so it’s hitting the same nostalgia-dopamine centers as Stranger Things did for the 1980s.

        Sorry for spoilers but…

        About the Lion King

It wasn’t “live action” just animated different.

Honestly could see it flopping because it’s a PG13 show at best and that just isn’t HBO’s brand

When I think HBO I think Sopranos or Game of Thrones and there’s no way this shit doesn’t look weak compared to the classic HBO lineup

Even if we didn’t know exactly what happens the stakes are so low

Seeing how well Hogwarts Legacy did even though most people seem to consider it mediocre, I unfortunately believe it will do quite well.

Steamcharts says peak playerbase was half a million on steam alone at launch. Elden Ring had 950k all-time. I’d say that’s pretty good for a middling open world.

Unfortunately, it did incredibly well. It made over $1 billion in revenue and is considered one of the best-selling video games of all time.

The generous sales seem to be just how WB Games does things. Batman, Lord of the Rings, etc. games from them were also like $5 barely a year after they came out.

We’re at the point where millions of people think if it’s on TV it must be good, what it is doesn’t matter. They’re illiterate, it’s just pictures and sounds on screen

Not convinced, but I do think the trend for this franchise was set in motion when the game released and people’s attitudes towards the franchise have been getting worse ever since.

How many actually want to see it though? Fans of the movies and series are nostalgic for those actors and I’m not sure how many will be won over by an obvious nostalgia cash grab.

It might actually do well in the global south where kids are given Harry Potter to learn English and are the new nostalgic demographic for something like this.

The game was one of the best selling of the year. There are people who will mindlessly buy into anything because it’s Harry Potter the same way there are people who will mindlessly buy into anything because it’s Star Wars or Marvel.

I really want to believe it will be a flop, but while it definitely won’t do as well as the movies, I’m not putting too much stock into consoomers having a backbone.

Mechanically it looks OK but deeply confused

Like it was a soulslike for people who suck at actual souls games but with ubisoft open world shit and it was marketed as if it was an MMO despite being single player only

          Really don’t see much appeal

I can’t even bring myself to pirate it tbh. I used to like Harry Potter, but it’s been completely contaminated by Rowling’s bigotry (and realising just how problematic the books are)

Yeah I don’t think it’ll flop unless it’s genuinely bad. Maybe ina few seasons it’ll lose viewership if it’s mid but otherwise it’s probably guaranteed a win for HBO.

Really wish that money was spent adapting other fantasy fiction though
