I really hate that I actually like 40k and also Warhammer Fantasy and mini games in general and have to exist in the same fandom as these “people” (Infinity is pretty neat fyi)
When did it become normal to be into warhammer? That was the final boss of being a nerd until like 2 years ago

- Covid lock downs gave people a lot of time at home to work on hobbies.
- A change in leadership at GW (Tom Kirby was replaced by Kevin Roundtree).
- The collapse of their main competitors shitting the bed (everyone is still flabbergasted how hard Warmachine and X-Wing shit the bed).
- Video games, fan content, and other secondary materials.
- Popularity of the Horus Heresy series.
But yeah. In high school, I had no problem if my peers thought we were playing Pokémon in the cafeteria at lunch (we were playing Magic). I would not be caught dead, however, talking about 40k.
A lot of fun video games came out that made it a lot more popular. Most 40K fans today have probably never even seen a miniature in person or know anything about the tabletop game. (Good honestly, it’s overpriced plastic crap, only good part about the miniatures is painting them)
There’s also this weird “loreification” of media in the past few years, where stories become less about what they make you feel or make you think, and more about the “deep lore” going on in the setting, and 40K has always been the final boss of that as well. So you get a ton of lore channels talking about it and since it has just so much fucking lore it’s easy for them to crank out videos endlessly.

Its kind of wild that Hasbro decided to forgo that obvious cash-cow with Magic The Gathering and instead just turned it into a slopfest. They could’ve done so much with their own IPs (Ravnica seems ripe for some sort of RPG, Phyrexia would be an awesome boomer-shooter) but that would require doing more than the bare minimum, so…
I think fan wikis and YouTube have lowered the barrier for entry for getting into the lore so much that it’s really not as unusual as someone having, say, good Star Trek lore knowledge these days. I’ve met pretty normie ass people who nonetheless know who like Chaos Gods and Space Marines are, same way a normie person is probably familiar with like Captain Picard and the Enterprise.

Fan wikis have been a thing for a while now tho. Something really recent happened specifically with 40k. YouTube algorithm has shown me it’s big enough to have been part of a South Park episode. It just seems super sudden and fairly recent.
I’m deeply familiar with a lot of super nerdy shit, I am a massive star trek and Tolkien nerd and working my way there with Gundam. I dont know what Chaos God is and barely know what a Space Marine is. I even used to play a lot of tabletops and forever Warhammer was kinda its own separate thing with a small but really into fan base. It got really mainstream recently and I dont really get it. My main connection is via the band Bolt Thrower and if everyone is listening to World Eater now that is sick

Really it was “If The Emperor Had a Text-to-Speech Device” blowing up on YouTube, imo, which spent alot of time shitting on the state of the Fandom and Games Workshop at the time (specifically voicing the absurdity of worshipping the Space Marines (fucking blueberries)). It got a lot of normal people I knew into the lore, which then cascaded into the wider public knowledge.
Unfortunately, because of Games Workshop vaguely gesturing at sueing all fan made content, they no longer do those videos. The good part is that instead they are doing parody/extremely intense drama around Hunter:The Gathering (which is Vampire: The Masquerade from the perspective of humans that know that there is more to the world), which is amazing and so fucking good.

Though the T’au have their own methods of control(and aren’t communist they have literal caste system ffs) the IoM is much more oppressive, a human auxiliary in the T’au empire has a much greater quality of life and intellectual freedom(they are free to still worship the emperor or other religions if they wish) than the average human in the imperium which is a worker in a Hive City eating corpse-starch, breathing pollutants living in a higher population density than Kowloon walled city, working 18+ hours a day and if they slip up in the slightest(I recently posted a quote where on some imperium worlds its illegal to read without a license) the get lobotomised into a servitor(T’au have mental condition ‘re-education’ but it pales in comparison to literal lobotomising and having most of your brain replaced with circuitry)

Yeah, the OG grim darkness of the Tau was that they were a young and much smaller space empire that only existed because everyone else was too busy fighting each other to wipe them out. It’s actually grim and dark storytelling, that the best hope for the galaxy are also the faction least capable of ever actually winning this perpetual war, just due to a massive resource imbalance.
Even in their introduction in the 3rd edition the OG T’au had the Ethereals having some-sort of para-normal control(implied to be pheromonal) over other T’au, but yeah the mental indoctrination/re-education etc stuff came later

Not exactly, to begin with, before the Ethereals united the race the different tribes of T’au that became the castes had some minor regional genetic adaptations, post-unification over time and due to implied selective breeding/eugenics these traits became more pronounced and they separated further genetically e.g. Fire caste became bigger and stronger than the rest, Air caste developed hollow bones etc
Yes non T’au races aren’t subject to the caste system, and follow their own social hierarchies: Kroot follow their Shapers, Vespid rely on Strain Leaders to speak for and communicate with the T’au and other races, There’s not a huge amount written about non-military humans(Gue’vesa: humans in the T’au military have their own sergeants etc who are in turn take orders from T’au commanders) in the T’au empire but they could well practice communism among themselves in some instances(the T’au empire being a post scarcity society in most places helps with that) but they are ultimately subject to T’au officials and officers

The caste system is fine given how good they are in every single other way. What matters is quality of life and treatment. They’re doing fine compared to anyone else is this hellverse.
I’d criticise the caste system a lot more if it actually manifested in anything visibly horrible for anyone living under it but it doesn’t as far as I’ve seen. Any critique of it is a criticism from the perspective of what human caste systems have been for people living in them rather than what the Tau one is actually producing.
True, they only real criticism of them is their attitude to Chaos(as until ‘recently’ they haven’t had to deal with it much as the T’au race’s souls are not ‘bright’ in the warp so not good Daemon chow, unlike some of their auxiliary races),
The 5th sphere expansion encountering T’Au’Va a Warp entity/god formed from the belief of the psychic auxiliary races in the greater good with many T’au considering it an abomination(as T’au consider the Greater Good purely a philosophy not a religion) leading to a new faction of T’au who are intent on ethnically cleansing the empire of all non-T’au species may take that in an interesting direction

Personaly having T’au Etheral only high-leadership precludes them from being a federation analogue, imo the Interex and Disporex were much closer to the federation, shame they where just fodder to show the downsides of Emp’s xenophobic vision during the Great Crusade
