Was a daily smoker almost uninterrupted for like 7-8 years (only ever 2-3 days off at most while travelling), had an epiphany last weekend and decided it wasn’t helping make life any better (also, $$$) and simply stopped. On average I was probably smoking 1-2g per day.
It’s been about 9 days and I only smoke in my newly more-vivid dreams (!) and also I’ve been outright weepy for major chunks of the day, which is unlike me. Is this normal? (I’m also turning 40 in a few weeks and have some feelings about that so it’s kinda tough to tell what’s motivating what.)
Anyway, was wondering if anyone else had quit and what it was like for them.
Try doing a ridiculous amount of exercise
This is also amazing. I became a really good long distance runner. I’m nearly 40 and I just keep getting faster
If you’re 40 and fit, you’re basically in your prime as a male. Silverback years, beat that chest comrade.
The fittest I’ve ever been in my life was at 38.
I’m currently 38. I’m hoping I can do a sub 3 hour marathon and then I’m done
Hell yea brother you fucking rock
I do have a very very active job thankfully but maybr I’ll run more than usual this fall
That’s how I did it. It works
Yes. After the intense night sweats and inability to sleep I then experienced incredibly vivid dreams. I never got weepy, but I’ve heard that’s quite common.
Regardless, the weepy moments go away, but the dreams stay, and they are incredible. I draw a lot of insight from my dreams. This isn’t some hippy spiritual mumbojumbo, I just genuinely think they highlight things you should pay attention to, for better or worse. Stuff that plays on your unconscious mind that you would rather ignore and avoid. Sometimes they can be warning you about stuff, or encouraging you to pursue stuff, or in one case for me, make me get in contact with an old friend that I had abandoned (this was like a recurring nightmare that only stopped once we’d reconnected and made amends)
Good luck on your journey comrade
Thanks for the insight! I will pay more attention 2 the dreams
Do yes, but only once they calm down. They will be hectic whilst you withdraw
i think day 3 is the hump for actual cravings personally but you do basically have to go without dopamine for a few weeks. exercise or something else stimulating like eating really spicy food can help
Hell yes, spice!
I quit recently, it has taken a while to get right as it were. Like cravings wear off after a while and the dreams come back hard and strange, but it can be hard to like find joy for a while, I think I’m still recovering even though its been a few months.
I also basically quit drinking because there’d been too many cases of me grabbing a couple of beers with friends and hitting up the dispensary on the way home. The booze wasn’t hard to quit, the shit basically doesn’t work on me anymore, but I kinda wish I could have a normal relationship with weed. I can’t though, I’ve never been able to like not be high. I can be very functional, and its helps me over the years, but I also had some really awful experiences on top of like hating myself and hiding my use from family, because they’d worry if they knew how much I consumed.
All in all I feel pretty though, my Mojo’s coming back, but I would def recommend just getting lots of rest, drinking lots of water, maybe taking some omega brain supplements, and try to work out if you have the gumption.
Yes. I’ve quit multiple times, in other words, I decided that I wasn’t enjoying being high at all. This has ended up in me quitting for about six months until I decide I want to try again, at which point I immediately become addicted again.
I’ve quit cold turkey twice. Honestly, it was far easier than I expected. I soon came to love how much more free time I felt like I had. When I get high, that’s just dead time, I can’t do anything that feels important. I got to work towards my creative and physical goals in my spare time.
The cravings were strange. I didn’t particularly want to get high, I wanted the routine of coming home from work and getting high. The first few days, I wanted to smoke just because that’s what I had been doing for the past few months. After that, I tried to find something better to do with my time. I remembered I have hobbies and friends. The cravings appeared every now and then, sometimes for about a week.
The way I got through my cravings was exercise. Its insane how good exercise can feel. I always, 100% of the time, leave the gym feeling great. The only times anything is lacking is when I feel I could have done more, but that means that my capacity is increasing. The other day, I was showering after hitting a PB on the treadmill, and realised I hadn’t felt this good in years. Exercise is a phenomenal way to manipulate the chemicals in your brain, and so much healthier than weed. Healthy eating also works a treat, though I find that much harder.
In terms of dreams, first of all, I also started to have much more vivid dreams after quitting. I can’t remember a single dream I had when I was using. For some reason, a lot of my dreams revolve around smoking cigarettes? Which is really weird, because I hate cigarettes.
As for being weepy, your body probably has no idea what chemicals to produce. For me, whenever I go off my sertraline for a few days I get very weepy and easily upset, much more so than before I ever started them. I think its just the body reacting weirdly to not having the chemicals it expects.

i have no concept of this. i was an endurance athlete for many years and it was mostly just boring and being sore and the only time i ever felt anything was a big scenic nature moment that didn’t actually have anything to do with the physical exertion.
I’m realizing that I use alcohol to feel intense emotions. Probably also why I’m hypersexual. And why i value intense anger.
I just like feeling alive. I struggle to do this.

A thread from a few weeks ago with some good advice
Thank you! I did a search but didn’t use the right keywords it seems.
You’re welcome! Yeah the search function is finicky sometimes so I figured I’d go through my comments to find it that way. Glad you hadn’t already seen it
yeah, it was mostly boring. Then my cptsd nightmares returned. After about a year I decided to smoke again because it does help my anxiety lol
This is my problem as well. Spravato gives me like one or mayyyyybe 2 nights of “normal” dreams after the treatment day and then it’s back to the TortureDome for me unless I take edibles.
Its the only way I’ve ever managed to do it
Both normal for me. I need to take a break to job hunt and for tolerance reset and as of this moment it’s 26 hours since I last used. I expect the dreams will be along in a few days like usual. I slept less than 4 hours last night, put in a full day’s work, was super irritable the whole time, and afterward crawled into bed and sobbed until I passed out, then woke up and cried some more. This is the worst episode I can recall, but going thru other stressors atm that I honestly need to be more clear-headed to deal with rn anyway.
I’m usually much more like myself after 3 days or so, and back to baseline within a couple weeks. Hang in there, hope you enjoy the dreams and find catharsis in the weeping, I know I usually do.
Yes, three times so far. Both of the previous times lasted about 10 months and right now I’m on week 6. Every symptom you described is something I went through in the first two weeks
It honestly is a huge relief to hear how common/consistent these symptoms are for others, thank you.
Absolutely. I hardly go on :stormfront: for anything these days but I find /r/leaves is a pretty good community for finding a lot of people going through the same thing
I quit for half a day back when Snoop Dogg said he quit but then it turned out to be a marketing campaign so I went right back to smoking.
i’ve only had the farm bill shit and i never found a therapeutic amount of edible.
I don’t know what a weed cold turkey is but it sounds gross and you probably shouldn’t smoke it
Concerntrates here can go as low as 3 dollars a gram on sales sometimes and are average 5-6 dollars. I was going through a grab every two to three days but if it was a weekend or i got home early I could burn through most of a gram in a day.
Was in my early twenties then and I did nothing but smoke and work. I tried so hard to smoke at work too but it just was not the vibe.
But I did quit cold turkey because I was giving myself panic attacks because I basicially didn’t get any sleep due to how much THC I was getting late at night. And god damn I felt like I had pretty intense withdrawls much worse than most. I felt like I got hot and cold flashes, and felt like I could not get joy out of anything for 2-3 weeks, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat. I volunteered to stay after at work to help someone, and got a gym membership for when I had any idle time. And I couldn’t just taper down I fucked up my mental space for a while and getting stoned gave me panic attacks.
Started up a while ago just much, much less. I get a ounce of the shittiest weed for 20 bucks at the weed stores and roll shitty joints or get blunt wraps when I’m feeling classy and that lasts me a month going at it. Sometimes they only have shake for that much and I’ll get a cheap bag of tabacco and make a spliff and its still good. Very mild, very short lived. Just don’t do it so close to bed time cut it off early like coffee, or beer. And don’t start smoking first thing in the morning. If the time doesn’t allow then maybe its just not a good day to get stoned.
I’m 2.5 weeks into quitting cold turkey right now. I still can’t stay asleep after about 3 am. Dreams are intense and vibrant. The cravings are mostly gone, but now my ADHD symptoms are back in strength. I’m a lot more social now though, and I feel a lot more motivate to do things I’ve been putting off. This is the second time I’ve done this. The last time I was cannabis free for 7 months before relapsing (hooray working in kitchens). I intend to stay off this time. Its nice not coughing constantly.
