Unironically, for a lot of power players. A lot of times it all gets rolled into one mega faction, in people’s minds, but a lot of Trump’s decisions upset a ton of powerful people. Not the fascism of course, but fucking with trade and commerce.

A countervailing force finally hit. Wouldn’t be surprised if there were plenty of “concerned representatives” making contact with Supreme Court members.

Too bad the damage has already been done by the US regime based on price increases in almost everything and so on. It’s not like prices are going to go down after this.

  • As of the middle of December, IEEPA tariffs had raised about $130 billion, according to the latest data available from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Trump has touted much higher numbers, up to $3 trillion.

    lmao. Wharton math.

i think this one’s kind of interesting because at this point the judiciary seems to me to be playing the most pure distillation of the expression of the opinions of capital on trump admin policies, so this i think in some sense represents capital formally telling trump that they don’t like the tariffs. it will be interesting to see how that develops. i think trump will probably just keep levying them one way or the other, but the tension with capital might be interesting. or maybe they’ll just fall in line behind the fuhrer, not sure yet.

Or he could “fire” them by sending them on a permanent vacation to Gitmo and right away putting in his own guys and women as an “emergency official act”.

Or best of all - he sends them to Gitmo and he becomes the supreme court. Everything happens on Truth Social. The “arguments” are bullet points and not longer. Trump then watches teevee and his aides check social media for him. In the next day or two Trump issues his ruling: “deal”, “no deal”, “bad deal”, “super deal”, “too stupid deal” etc.

Apparently there are literally hundreds of lawsuits related to tariff refunds in US courts right now. Wonder if any of those will be significant

This was the plan all along to starve the beast. They passed all their tax cuts and were all in on tariffs to make up the rest and now the controlled opposition removed the tariffs so they have no choice but to implement broad austerity.

It’s also PR for GOP SCOTUS to make them seem reasonable for some of their upcoming rulings this summer - some of which will be grotesque: Birthright Citizenship, the Voting Rights Act, etc.

The Supreme Court is currently controlled by a bunch of Federalist Society freaks. It’s the culmination of a decades-long conservative project to rig the federal judiciary in their favor. As with many pre-Trump conservatives, there’s a lot of overlap in goals, but also some significant points of disagreement.

It’s also an institution that takes a much longer view than Trump. There is at least some desire to maintain the legitimacy of the courts.
