Final fantasy 6 is the best one because I played it as a child. Final fantasy 1 is the worst one because I never played it and it seems really basic.

7 is also the worst because it sucks up all the oxygen in the room and prevents square from ever doing anything else. Can’t wait for the remakes remake in ten years when final fantasy 17 doesn’t sell like the remake trilogy did.

The best one is the one you played during your formative years and have the most nostalgia for. The worst one depends on if you want to form your own opinion or just listen to youtube essayists. If it’s the essayists, then two is the worst because it different and different bad, or possibly eight because again, different therefore bad.

The real answer? The terrible gatcha mobile game auto battler that was one the most heavily pay to win mobile games ever made.

You’re right, I really love FF6 : formative years, didnt quite read perfectly english then, too - so kind of “exotic”.

The soundtrack hits different, I fantasized being that loner hero in the schoolyard, with the track of the open world playing in my mind.

Also I really love the artwork in the booklet (or was it?) from Yoshitaka Amano, it has a light and flowy touch to it. Ive recently learned that he worked on Vampire Hunter D, which was a show I shared watching with my older sister!

      But like you said, nostalgia.

Time to annoy the final fantasy fans.

I like 13, and lightning returns. 13-2 is extremely boring filler content where the story takes place in a 5 minute window in the ending cutscene of 13. 13 is how imagined my favourite movie, spirits within, as a video game because its still the best looking corridor ever put to the ps360 generation and i legit like the story and characters. Lightning returns continues to be a fever dream, it had a vibe i cant describe at all.

15 is my favourite gay coded boyband romp and I just love their outfits and car.

16 i love me some CLOIV REDFEEELD. Its what an E3 trailer from 15 years ago would be if it was a video game.

11 and 14 are great but thats cos i love MMOs.

Why do i love these ones? Because deep down i really dont like final fantasy. I bounced off 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 i think 10 was the first one I played and i almost died of boredom. I’ve played them all to completion so nobody can convince me that it gets good at hour 750. But I also say this is evidence that square also seems to hate final fantasy by shifting the games to something else entirely

At a certain point, you’re just hurting yourself lol. Life is too short to force yourself to play so many games you don’t like. It’s why I still haven’t played all the Dark Souls games despite them being super popular, either. Maybe one day I will try again, but it won’t be forcing myself through so many if I know I don’t like them. I’ll try one and give it a try and see if it clicks more, and if it doesn’t, meh.

But I give you bonus points for liking the ones nobody else does. I’m sure the devs who worked hard on them appreciate it.

You would be right but im a real sicko and play/watch things I don’t like because I don’t like them. I have banks of essays I keep to myself on games, movies and shows that hurt my brain I get a weird kick out of it. My real hobby is complaining about everything and liking the things nobody else likes, for example Two Worlds which is definitively the best RPG ever made and witcher 3 is the worst. I will not elaborate.

its still the best looking corridor ever put to the ps360 generation

I think it was just a case of bad timing, everything was going open world or semi open world, and FF12 was very open, so people didn’t like that this one was extremely linear, had it come out a few years earlier or a few years later once people started getting fatigued by big empty open worlds, it probably would’ve been much more well received.

IIRC the reason it got panned was because it was like running a long corridor, lack of towns and shops and overworld map. You had to play for over half the game before it opened up.

Best? Depends on who you ask. 10,9,16, story of 14 are some of my favs though.

Worst? Boy trip FF midlife crisis edition trying to do a worst style Neir story telling. Aka 15. (The real answer is it probably just depends. But fucking hell I hate that game.)

Edit: lol I didn’t see the body text before I posted.

I will only comment on what I played, imo Tactics is the best (with VII being a close second) while I is pretty weak and barebones. Not really that much of a hot take, seeing as I is the first and the winning formula hadn’t been established yet. But it’s wild how the best game in the franchise (again imo) is a spin off title.

    5 followed by 3/2 then 7, 1, 8/9, 12, 6,10,12,13 and the rest (I stopped at 15)

I prefer the classics. I also play the original release no re-release as they change the calculations every re-release.

Tactics games aren’t mainline final fantasy tho (๑>؂•̀๑)

Plus Tactics Ogre or X-COM are better tactics games, the only thing FF tactics (PSX) has is pretty graphics. The maps and teams are too small. It has it’s fans, I’m not one of them. (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ

Oh yeah I know I read what you said, I haven’t played the handheld games yet. I will give them a go at some stage to see if they click with me. I would hope they are an improvement over the PlayStation game but I am hesitant. I’ve yet to play Knight of Lodis too tbf. I do have hot takes but like I know the games are liked which is valid. I have particular tastes and I enjoy difficult games (been described as a masochist) but I do like hearing why people like games I don’t particularly gel well with.

What do you like about the job system and have you anything else to “sell” me on the games? ૮ • ﻌ - ა

It’s the only gba game I still have my original cartridge of from when I was a kid and bought it a few weeks after launch. My original file has 500 hours played on it according to the in game counter. I’ve played it from a new file 4 other times. The story isnt great, it’s enough but dont expect anything close to fft, its more Saturday morning cartoon vibes. This is fine cause there is like…SOOOOOO many side missions. The main game is maybe a quarter of the full game, possibly less. The party building/leveling system is my favorite out of any rpg ive played. Experience is split into exp for your stats and AP for learning abilities, the abilities are attached to equipment which you need to be using to have the ability and then when you reach enough AP it’s yours. There are dispatch missions you can send party members on where they wont be there for a set number of days or battles and those grant AP but not EXP, this is how you can get silly with it. You have two main ability slots. One for the class youre using and one from any other class you have gained abilities in. So for example, if you want a fighter with white magic but dont wanna sacrifice hitting hard by leveling as a white mage, you can send em on dispatch to learn the spells, maybe get a couple levels in the class to get your mp up to snuff and then switch back to fighter for most of your stat leveling. Your party can be up to 30 people although you only use 8 or so in battle at a time, so the customization potential is off the charts. In my last playthrough I made the main character a fighter with white magic who had doublesword from the ninja class and a standard physical attacks miss me every time ability from the archer class (there also passive and reactive abilities and you can pick just one but once again, from any class you’ve mastered the ability from. I had a split summoner/assassin who took a brief stint in red magic to learn doublecast. Once you get the hang of how the system works it’s just really fun to work on your team. It’s a super easy game and I kinda wish there was some tougher challenges for when your party is nearly maxed out, but there are 300 quests, a system of battling other parties for control of the world map, capturing and raising monsters if you’ve got a beast master and it used to have cool link cable co-op missions as well. The battle system is also WAY better than FFT, you can cast a spell on the turn you select it for example

My original file has 500 hours

That’s a lot of hours, I usually back mine up from emulators or my handhelds at this point. I think I have close to 200-250 hours between recent Pokemon gen 1 and 2 romhacks.

The abilities from equipment sounds interesting. I found the classes in FFT kind of lacking in so far as a lot of the classes were watered down from previous games so a few of them felt redundant, so the customisation and tweaking of building the class sounds like an improvement. A lot of the defaults are enough to beat FFT which wasn’t really a challenge.

It’s a super easy game and I kinda wish there was some tougher challenges

I know there’s a big community for these games which have put out a load of hacks for rebalancing and such. Depends on if you feel you want to play romhacks.

(Dare I wade into this) So are the skills you buy for units in FFTA categorised into react/support/etc or are there just a set amount of slots for them or what? Skills attached to equipment could be neat. I am curious bc I just finished FFT.

You dont buy skills, you buy equipment like weapons and armor etc and that equipment comes attached with different abilities, sometimes the same ability can be learned by different jobs (like there is a cerain robe that grants/teaches auto regen to any magic class) from the same item and sometimes it has different abilities for different jobs, like the flame rod as i recall teaches fire to a black mage and haste to a time mage.

So say youre a white mage and also lesrned some time magic and black magic. Those are active skills, so you would have white magic by default as a white mage and then could pick to either have access to the time magic or black magic that you’ve mastered. Then there are reactive skills like reflex which makes standard attacks miss but offensive abilities still work, auto regen where when you get hit for the first time and spell activates that restores a little health each turn, stuff like that and you can pick one skill out of the ones you know regardless of what class your in, same goes for your passive skills (called support abulites in game) slot which is stuff like the classic doublesword grom ninja allowing you to hold a weapon in both hands and hit twice, doublehand is another where you can hold a two handed wespon with one and equip a shield or whatever in the other hand, or cut mp where my cost is cut in half, stuff like that.

For your active skills which are things like spells etc you get the full list of whatever you’ve mastered for the class you’re in and the class you’ve chosen for your second slot.

I do like Tactics’ job system though and that’s actually what I’ve been replaying recently on the Switch (I should post some screenshots I forgot how good the early class-war plot was with the Corpse Brigade, Wiegraf my beloved), but don’t consider them mainline!

TA has a bit of a different job system than tactics. Skills have their own exp and are attached to equipment, do enough stuff and you can use the ability. So you can gain skills in a class without leveling stats in it

Best: 6. It was the peak of the 2D sprite era RPGs. Interesting characters, interesting plot, great game mechanics, plenty of fun side quests, satisfying ending.

Worst: 8. Baffling confusing nonsensical plot, an irritating time-sink magic-power grinding mechanism, and I didn’t care if any of the characters (playable or NPC) lived or died.

I have no idea about post-8 games, never played them.

I don’t think XV is that bad, but it’s clearly unfinished even though it was in development for a decade. It’s obvious when you go to that Venice-inspired city that has almost nothing to do in it, and the end of the game runs out of steam hard: one of the chapters is just a turret section. They also tried to sell extra chapters as DLC and tried to pivot to a separate multiplayer co-op mode, just lol, didn’t care about any of that.

The story in general is just a big bunch of nothing, especially if you haven’t watched that animated movie. I did enjoy just cruising around with my bros and the relatively open world, while clearly ripping off Xenoblade Chronicles, was fun.

7 and 9 are my favourites. 7 remains the most relevant today because the story is marxist. People will claim it’s because it was just the first 3d one but they’re wrong.

I enjoyed 10-2 as well. 10 is my least favourite. I didn’t touch 12. We don’t talk about 13. I don’t like the new ones either but mainly because the main character’s feel so masculine it alienates me from the characters.

The best is Final Fantasy X-2.5 ~Eien no Daishō~, because one of the main plot points is a protagonist tragically dying by mistaking a bomb for a football.

The worst is every Final Fantasy where this does not happen, which I think is all of the others (except maybe Kingdom Hearts??)
